Media Center in Windows 7 is great for ripping DVDs
January 14th, 2009I have invested a lot of time and storage space ripping whole DVDs to my computer. This worked out great, because there is a hidden feature in Windows Vista Media Center for viewing DVDs that have been ripped to hard drives. This worked pretty well, but reveling the menu required changing a value in the registry, and the feature wasn’t very polished, which is likely why it was hidden in the first place. Things have changed in the Windows 7 Beta.
Now there is a “movies” menu front and center in Media Center’s start menu. ![]()
A peek at Media Center in Windows 7
January 13th, 2009I don’t know how else to say it: Media Center in Windows 7 is awesome! This post won’t go too much into why, but rather will show the initial setup experience, which is still pretty cool.
When the user first opens Windows Media Center, he is greeted with the following screen. He may pan left and right to get an overview of the software’s features, as I will do through a series of screenshots.
Windows 7 has a new Windows Experience Index scale
January 13th, 2009Vista’s ratings for the Windows Experience Index were are capped at 5.9, and it seems that Windows 7’s ratings are capped at 7.9. I thought it would be interesting to compare how each operating system rated my computer, so I dug up a screenshot of my computer’s Windows Experience Index and snapped a shot of the rating in 7. Draw your own conclusions about the significance of the change.
Windows 7 Beta gets update to fix MP3 bug
January 13th, 2009There was a bug in the Windows 7 Beta that causes some MP3 file corruption issues. A few days ago a hotfix was released for MSDN subscribers (who also got the beta 2 days before the general public), and now the update is available on Windows Update. Happy days! (Related: Windows Update received an update in Windows 7.)
