RoomieRemake woke me up and made me coffee!

April 26th, 2010

I recently rearranged the Z-Wave modules in my house to devices that I care about controlling more.  I put one on the coffee maker so that I could preload it and either schedule it to turn on or turn it on through the Roomie website, which would be good for if I were heading home sometime and wanted a fresh cup waiting for me.  I also put a module on my computer monitors and speakers, which are in my bedroom.  This lets a script turn them off when I go to bed and back on right before a script wakes me up with music.

This morning RoomieRemake woke me up with two short scripts.  And hey, more news!  I used the recently-updated website (which I’ve apparently never directly blogged about) to write the scripts.  Here’s a screenshot of that.

Here’s the script that ran on Dreaming Nest, my Home Server, which has a ThinkStick USB Z-Wave controller.

Netflix is my friend

April 16th, 2010

When a company does something gratuitously nice for the customer, I think it deserves a little praise.  Below is a screen shot of an email that I just received from Netflix, an unlimited movie rental service.  I pay a monthly fee for the two-DVDs-at-a-time plan.

The couch has a USB port

March 26th, 2010

couch USB port

Today I did some reorganizing and had a chain of really long USB cables to use, so I plugged one end into the back of the Xbox 360 and then wrapped the cable along the baseboards, ending nestled into couch.  Woop!  Now I have a USB port for the Xbox 360 right there.  My inner dork rejoices!

This is why you double check things

January 27th, 2010

After months of blaming my i7 desktop computer’s tendency to overheat on it’s high performance and small size, I discover that… the CPU fan was on backwards.  fail.  It’s temps used to hover around 50°C, now they’re down to just below 40.  Recently, when transcoding a DVD with HandBrake, the temps got up to 80°C, but now with the fan reversed, and all of that dust removed, it rises to a reasonable 65°C.  Happy days!
