Another Bot Approaches
August 19th, 2008Another "trout" bot just talked to me. Another bot by a different "trout-related" name tried to have a conversation with me a few days ago. This time I played along a little bit.
(8:01:05) blanketedtrout: Have you lied to your children today?
(8:01:22) me: are you a bot?
(8:01:30) blanketedtrout: Erm. Who might you be?
(8:01:43) me: my name is greg
(8:01:52) me: who are you?
(8:02:03) blanketedtrout: Where have you found me?
(8:02:12) me: I didn’t. You IM’d me first
(8:02:20) blanketedtrout: I beg to differ?
(8:02:28) me: do you want my social security number or something?
(8:02:38) blanketedtrout: And your mothers maiden name.
(8:02:45) blanketedtrout: Are you from PSC?
(8:02:57) me: kthankxbye
At that point i blocked it.
What’s up with these bots? How did they get my screen name, and what purpose do they serve? These are some questions that I would love to have answered. For now I will just make use of the trusty "block" feature.
Please leave a quick comment if you have had a similar experience.

Hahaha.
Ok, these are troutbots. They randomly connect two peoples screen names and…disguise the peoples REAL screen name by changing it to somethingTROUT. I got my first one about…30 minutes ago.
Theyre harmless.
I got 2 of these 2 days in a row. Heres what it said today.
BlanketedTrout (8:18:23 PM): I just wrote a eulogy for him. Would you like to read it?
BlanketedTrout signed off at 8:27:31 PM.
I blocked it. It creeped me out.
